The Lord's Church at Berkeley Springs, WV
When you attend services at the Berkeley Springs church of Christ you will find people who will treat you with kindness and courtesy. Our worship service is not a display of emotion or excitement, but a simple and devout period of worship. You will find people who are worshiping "in spirit and in truth" according to the New Testament pattern for worship - a weekly observance of the Lord's Supper (Acts 20:7); contributing financially as we have "been prospered" (1 Corinthians 16:1-2); following the New Testament command and example of joining our hearts and voices together in the singing of "psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs" (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16) - without the use of instrumental music (which first appeared in the 6th century). You will find our services conducted by men of the congregation - not by "clergy" with special robes or titles. The only source of authority for our work, worship, and doctrine is the inspired, inerrant Word of God - the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:3,20-21; Proverbs 30:5-6).
What is "the church"? It is the spiritual body made up of those who have obeyed the gospel of Christ, have become His people, and are worshiping and working as His people in a given community. They wear His name and are His spiritual body on earth. They honor Christ in all things. Being part of the church does not mean just participating in a human organization or having membership in a group. It means having an intimate, ongoing relationship with Christ.
The church, the body of Christ, is entered by faith. This faith response involves repentance (Acts 17:30-31); confession of Jesus as God's Son (Romans 10:10); and baptism into Christ (Romans 6:3; Galatians 3:27). It is at the point of baptism that one's sins are washed away, and with his new birth completed, they become part of the body of Christ (Acts 2:38,41,47; Acts 22:16; 1 Corinthians 12:13).
To put it simply, the church at Berkeley Springs is seeking to be the same church one reads about in the New Testament. It is our aim to restore its doctrine, its practice, its lifestyle, and its zeal.
